Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School Dedicates a Room to Peace
By Marie Snyder, Assistant Dean of Students
Piloting a new Restorative Discipline program at Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School, students have been setting the tone of calm and success for the 2016-17 school year. Located in the main building,
the Peace Room offers a safe and comfortable space for students and staff to discuss trauma, practice restorative circles, engage in conflict resolutions, and host teacher and parent conferences. Each day, students use Peace Circles to check in and offer advice. The Peace Room also has many tactile and calming pieces, such as coloring books, magnetic sand, and stress balls. Students are putting together lists of items they would like to include in the Peace Room, such as headphones to practice mindfulness and more pipe cleaners to make art, and will open a DonorsChoose fundraiser soon. The Peace Room is open to all staff and students, and all are welcome to visit after school.
