Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos (1891–1965), a prominent Puerto Rican nationalist, lawyer, and political leader, known for his fierce advocacy of Puerto Rican independence from the United States. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he excelled academically, earning a scholarship to study engineering at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later completing his law degree at Harvard University.
As the leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, which opposed Puerto Rico’s status as a U.S. territory, he advocated for independence through peaceful and militant means. His views and leadership inspired many, but also led to multiple imprisonments by U.S. authorities. Despite enduring harsh treatment and physical and psychological abuse during his time in prison, Albizu Campos never wavered in his commitment to Puerto Rican sovereignty. He is an enduring symbol of resistance against colonialism and oppression throughout his life.
Although his time in prison severely affected his health, his legacy as a passionate advocate for Puerto Rican independence continued to influence generations after him. Many remember Albizu Campos as "El Maestro," the teacher, for his role in educatingand inspiring Puerto Ricans to fight for their freedom and self - determination.
